Cabo San Lucas is hot in July, August and September, with warm ocean water and a growing chance of rain as summer goes on. September is the wettest of the three months, and all three fall within the eastern Pacific hurricane season, which peaks from August to October, according to Veabird’s Los Cabos weather and water averages.
What is Cabo weather like in July, August and September?
Think hot days, warm nights and ocean water that’s comfortable for swimming. The rain figures vary between climate sources, so treat them as broad averages, not a promise about the weather on your travel dates. The table shows the ranges reported by two sources for each month.
| Month | Average daytime high | Rainfall per month | Average sea temperature |
|---|---|---|---|
| July | 91 to 93°F (33 to 34°C) | 0.9 to 0.6 in (24 to 15 mm) | About 83°F |
| August | 91 to 93°F (33 to 34°C) | 2 to 2.8 in (50 to 72 mm) | 83 to 86°F |
| September | 90 to 91°F (33°C) | 3.1 to 4.1 in (80 to 104 mm) | About 86°F |
The temperature and rainfall ranges combine monthly averages from Sunseason’s Cabo climate data and Los Cabos Airport’s weather page. Their rainfall figures differ, but both show the same pattern: July is driest of these three, and September is wettest. Water temperatures come from Veabird’s area averages and Los Cabos Airport, whose August figure is lower than Veabird’s.
These are averages, not forecasts. Sunseason uses WorldClim monthly normals for 1970 to 2000, while Veabird’s averages use six years of reanalysis data for a grid covering the area. Use the numbers to compare the months, then check a current forecast closer to your trip.
Which month is best: July, August or September?
July is the best bet if you want the least rain of the three. Its average high is around 91 to 93°F (33 to 34°C), and the sources put average rainfall between 0.6 and 0.9 inches (15 and 24 mm). That doesn’t mean it can’t rain, but it is the driest choice among these months in the figures available.
August is the middle ground for rain, but not for heat. Average highs remain around 91 to 93°F (33 to 34°C), and average rainfall ranges from 2 to 2.8 inches (50 to 72 mm). The sea is particularly warm, averaging 83°F at Los Cabos Airport and 86°F in Veabird’s figures.
September is the one to think twice about if you want reliably dry beach days. It has the highest rainfall averages of the three, at 3.1 to 4.1 inches (80 to 104 mm), and the highest humidity figure in the available monthly data. It’s also when the water is warmest in Veabird’s averages, at about 86°F.
If you’re deciding between the three, our pick is July for the better chance of drier weather, and August for very warm water with a higher rain risk. September suits travelers who are comfortable with weather uncertainty. For a month-by-month comparison beyond summer, see our best time to visit Cabo guide.

How hot and humid is Cabo in August and September?
It’s hot throughout summer, including after dark. The monthly averages reported by Sunseason put nighttime lows around 73°F (23°C) in all three months. Los Cabos Airport’s figures are warmer for July and August, with lows around 80°F (26 to 27°C), then about 77°F (25°C) in September. The difference is a reminder that averages vary by data source and location.
For a sense of humidity, timeanddate reports average humidity of 55% in July, 62% in August and 67% in September. There’s an important caveat: its climate averages are listed under La Paz, which it says is 147 kilometers from Cabo San Lucas, so Cabo’s actual conditions can vary. The same page reports September as its wettest month, with 114.4 mm of average precipitation.
Plan around the heat rather than assuming every day will be comfortable outdoors from morning to night. Keep water with you, schedule strenuous activities for cooler parts of the day, and leave some room in your plans for a change of weather. If beach access is a priority, check your hotel’s location and beach conditions before booking. Our Cabo beaches guide explains why a beach view doesn’t automatically mean safe swimming.
Is Cabo in hurricane season in August and September?
Yes. The eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from mid-May through November, and its peak is August to October, according to Veabird. That makes August and September months to take seriously when you’re choosing travel dates. The notes describe Los Cabos storm risk as moderate compared with the other beaches covered by that source; that isn’t a prediction that a storm will affect your trip.
Book with the possibility of disruption in mind. Check cancellation terms, consider travel insurance that fits your plans, and watch official advisories as your dates approach. Veabird specifically recommends flexible bookings and travel insurance during peak hurricane-season months. For more on seasonal storms and planning, read our Cabo hurricane season guide.
Warm water doesn’t mean every beach is safe to swim at. Veabird warns that surf is stronger on the Pacific side than in the Caribbean and advises following local flags and rip-current warnings. It identifies Chileno and Santa María as Blue Flag beaches, but conditions can still change, so check local guidance before getting in. See our guide to Cabo resorts with swimmable beaches if swimming from your hotel matters to you.
Are prices lower in Cabo in summer?
The weather sources don’t provide hotel or flight prices, so they can’t establish that July, August or September is the cheapest month. If a lower bill is your reason for considering summer, compare the actual dates and room terms you’re offered rather than assuming the season guarantees a deal. Prices change, and a rate that looks low may come with cancellation restrictions that matter more during hurricane season.
Before you book, decide what trade-off you’re willing to make: July has the lowest rainfall averages of the three, August offers warm water with more rain, and September is the wettest but has very warm water too. If you’re set on a summer trip, keep plans flexible and check weather and beach advisories close to departure. If you’d rather avoid the hottest and most storm-prone stretch, compare these months with the cooler-season advice in our Cabo weather by month guide.
