Beaches

Cabo beaches you can actually swim at

Sea of Cortez coves are calm. Pacific beaches have heavy shore break and undertow, and people drown every year. Here is the short list.

Do not swim on the Pacific side

Most Pacific-facing beaches have dangerous currents, a steep drop-off and powerful shore break, and most have no lifeguards, per Mr Playas. That includes Divorce Beach, Solmar and Pedregal.

Look, do not swim

  • Divorce Beach: the Pacific side of Lover's Beach. Never swim here.
  • Solmar: long Pacific beach in town. Good for sunset walks and winter whale spotting.
  • Pedregal and the Pacific hotel strip: red flags are posted often.
  • Costa Azul and Hotelera (San Jose): surf beaches.
  • Las Viudas, Monuments, Barco Varado: swim with caution only on calm days.

What the beach flags mean

FlagMeaning
GreenGood conditions
YellowCaution
RedDangerous, no swimming
BlackBeach closed

Beaches can stay under black flags for days after a storm, as during Hurricane Polo in October 2026, per CaboSanLucas.net. The U.S. State Department also warns of rip tides and rogue waves and advises never swimming alone.

All beaches are public

In Mexico the beach and the federal shoreline zone are public. A hotel can front a beach but cannot make it private, though you may need a marked public access.

Stay on a swimming beach

Medano is the one beach in town where most people can swim right outside the hotel.
